Introduction
Have you ever been away from home camping, RV’ing or boating and wished you had easy access to mains power – or access to more mains power in an easy convenient way? Yeah, me too. If you live in a house, and enjoy a bit of camping, boating or enjoying a few days away in your motorhome it is now easy to take mains electricity away with you in the form of a portable, lightweight power station. The best portable power station around, in this price bracket, is the EcoFlow Delta 2 shown above. Buy direct from EcoFlow.
About Lithium Iron Phosphate – LiFePO4
The portable power station has been made possible because of the introduction of lithium-ion technology in the form of lightweight high-capacity batteries. Since the early days of lithium-ion the chemistry has been radically improved. It was found that lithium-ion alone, was very good, but not as stable as it could be. Research brought in an improved lithium technology, the one we use today, Lithium Iron Phosphate – LiFePO4 is standard in the best portable power stations as well as electric cars such as Tesla etc.
The one I would recommend is shown above. It’s has great reviews, which is more than can be said about the cheap end of the market. Really good customer service and a full 5 year guarantee.
EcoFlow has discounted the unit to be a price beater. Full warranty, new and still in the box. Best portable power station deal around. Look also for the occasional instant discount that appears periodically.

Ease of transport and addition of solar
One of the really great things about these units is that they are easily transported to and from your RV. No need to leave them where they could be stolen. In addition, to assist the power station they can be charged while you’re driving or moored in your boat. If your engine is not running, you could have a folding solar kit plugged into the power station charging quietly in the sun.

Efficient solar management
The unit I have chosen is mid-range and you have to realise that it has been chosen because it is compact and not too heavy. Although the unit will boil an 1800w kettle, it is best avoided simply because you’ll be able to operate the less power hungry electrical items for very much longer from fully charged. Connecting a solar panel is very helpful if practical. You can plug it directly into the unit , and the built in MPPT (maximum power point tracking) solar controller will take the the absolute maximum from the solar panel – charging the power stations internal LiFePO4 battery.
There are two main types of solar controller, the PWM which stands for pulse width generator and the MPPT that tranlates as maximum power point tracking. The PWM unit is okay to use on simple charging jobs, but the unit is very restrictive and in in good weather very wasteful too. I use one myself on a simple starter batteries charging circuit. However, PWM is what NOT to use use on an important domestic circuit. This is where the MPPT controller fitted to this power station comes into its own. MPPT is much more efficient than PWM and far less wasteful.

Battery extensions
If you intend to use power hungry equipment like domestic kettles on a regular basis it would be advisable to obtain one or two of the battery extensions, or buy a larger capacity power station from the same company. If it’s practical you could also hook up solar panels directly to the power station.
I strongly recommend the EcoFlow Delta units. Originally, I was looking for cheap high-power units and found plenty. Unfortunately, many of the reviews of these cheap products left a lot to be desired. When I looked into EcoFlow as an option, I looked at several suppliers, and was surprised to find how highly respected these units are. As well as everything mentioned already, the power station also includes, as standard, all the cables required to operate the unit plus addition cables to attach solar panels etc.
